Sports Update for November

The Premier League rolls on throughout November, in spite of yet another international break mid month. Highlights include the visit of Chelsea to Manchester United on the 3rd, Liverpool host Aston Villa on the 9th, the London derby between Chelsea and Arsenal is on the 10th and the heavyweight clash between Manchester City and Liverpool is at the end of the month. Both Chelsea and Liverpool have a particularly tricky fixture list coming up over the next month or so and any pretensions they may have towards a title challenge will become much clearer afterwards.

The DP World tour, otherwise known as the European tour, comes to a climax with the Abu Dhabi HSBC golf championship, being played from the 7th – 10th of the month. This is followed by the DP Tour championship, with prize money of over £9,000,000, which is being played in Dubai from the 14th – 17th. This is one of the few occasions when the European tour draws the spotlight away from the tour in the USA. These are top quality events and the time difference between Thailand and the Middle East make it ideal viewing for the golf following locals.

November is the month when the Melbourne Cup is run in Australia at the Flemington racecourse in Melbourne. Billed as “the race that stops a nation”, for many Australians the first Tuesday in November, which this year falls on the 5th, is de facto taken as an unofficial public holiday by huge swathes of the population. Schools and offices close and people gather together to watch the great race in their homes and pubs and clubs across the country. With prize money well North of six million dollars, the race is now targeted by horses from around the world and has become a true international event. A 3pm off time will mean an early start for race fans in Thailand.

That’s about it for November. Happy viewing to sports fans everywhere.
