Exploring Sharples' New Menu Delights: From Chicken Balti Pie to Battered Haggis
The Discover Pattaya Team are always keen to find out what’s new and happening at Sharples. With three branches throughout town, one in Central Pattaya, one by the Lake, and one in Jomtien, you may have already read some of our reviews. If not, you can still find them on our website pattayatrader.com on the home page or in our Dining Reviews page.
The thing about having a Fish and Chip shop is no matter how great the offering of Atlantic Cod and Haddock is. Even with the famously generous portion of chips and various sauces and sides, most of us can only manage Fish and Chips once a week. Therefore, with regulars in mind, Sharples have extended their menu to include Jumbo sausages, Doner Kebabs, and a selection of pies. The Doner Kebabs we had tried, the selection of pies not yet. Therefore, we thought a return trip to the Jomtien branch (just up from the Jomtien complex) would be a good idea.
My colleague opted for the most unusual of the pies, namely a Chicken Balti pie. Chicken Balti pie is a delicious fusion dish that combines the flavors of a traditional Balti curry with the comforting, hearty nature of a British pie.
Originating from the culinary traditions of Birmingham, England, this pie typically features tender pieces of chicken cooked in a fragrant and spicy Balti sauce, which is rich with tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger, and a blend of aromatic spices such as cumin, coriander, and garam masala.
The filling is encased in a flaky, golden pastry crust that provides a satisfying contrast to the robust flavors of the curry. Popular at football matches and local pubs, Chicken Balti pie has become a beloved part of British food culture, celebrated for its unique blend of Indian and British culinary elements. With perfect pastry, really generous chunks of chicken, and a really great Balti flavor, he declared it to be “Top Drawer.”
Whilst I decided to be more adventurous and opt for the “Battered Haggis & Chips.” Battered haggis is a unique twist on the traditional Scottish dish, bringing together the rich, savory flavors of haggis with the irresistible crunch of a crispy batter. Haggis, a flavorful mix of minced sheep’s heart, liver, and lungs combined with oats, onions, and spices, is traditionally enjoyed during Burns Night celebrations. When encased in a light, golden batter and deep-fried, the haggis takes on a new dimension, offering a delightful contrast between the crispy exterior and the tender, well-seasoned interior.
