Gloria interviews Regina at the Jazz Pit

Where were you born Regina?

I was born in Russia and the city of Ufa

And where did you go to school and university? What did you study?

I graduated from Saratov State University named after Chernyshevsky studying Piano, Opera vocals and History of Art

What’s your connection with the Jazz Pit?

I moved to Thailand in 2003 and began to visit the Jazz Pit and sing songs with my father. My father Ramil taught me jazz and for 10 years I grew up listening to my father’s music. Now 21 years later I am now standing on this stage myself

I haven heard that your Father is an excellent pianist with perfect pitch.

Yes, my father Ramil Mediarov is quite famous with the jazz community, in both Russia and Thailand. He travelled with his band to perform in jazz concerts in Russia and also, about 50 other countries. He also composes his own songs and has lived in Thailand for more than 35 years. He still plays jazz now in Phuket

How has he influenced you to sing jazz?

He didn’t influence me to sing jazz, I just love it ! In university we had jazz history class and I was listening to jazz in Russia before I got to Thailand

In Russia, I believe you were very happy to paint portraits of friends and family and it is still something you love to do?

I have been drawing pictures since I can remember, all my life I have been interested in painting, so I constantly paint for sale too. I currently specialise in impressionism That’s great you are so talented. Can I also ask what is your favourite song to sing? My favourite composer is Antonio Carlos Jobim. He is Brazilian so I love to listen to and sing his bosanovas in the original Portuguese language

Finally, what can you tell me so great about performing with Thomas and his band?

I really enjoy working with such professional musicians as Thomas, Yoshi, Andy and Sunny, as well as all the other musicians who come from different countries to play at The Jazz Pit. It is just a pleasure and they inspire me every time we perform together
